The collapse has begun…..

During the Reds/Brewers game yesterday Prince Fielder shoved Manny Parra in the dugout. While it was nowhere near the Michael Barrett/Carlos Zambrano brawl in the Cubs’ dugout last year, it was still pretty good.
Maybe “The Ballplayer Formerly Known as Cecil’s Son” needs to start eating meat again. All those vegetables are making him cranky. Nevertheless, just like last year, the collapse is starting. It’s the same team, so why did they expect different results? The Cubs series intensified the pressure that they are under, and the incident last night proved they just aren’t ready to handle that pressure.
But therein lies the problem. Sheets and Sabathia are most likely gone after this season. Fielder is a good bet to be traded in the off-season, as 2009 is his final year before free agency. But the Brewers traded away his replacement, Matt LaPorta, in the Sabathia deal. In trying to catch the Cubs, the Brewers traded away their chance at any future success. And now it’s looking like they will be lucky to win the Wild Card.
Couldn’t happen to a better team, or group of fans.

I have to say. Over the last few years of talking baseball on the internet I have found that Cubs fans are the absolute nastiest fans I have come across. You guys seem to have nothing but disdain for your rival fans and teams. And I say this as a guy who lives with Yankees/Red Sox and Yankees/Mets. But I really don’t think they’re as bad as Cubs fans are to the Brewers or White Sox. ESPECIALLY the White Sox. I mean I know Sox and Yankee fans who act like the other is the lowest form of society but I’ve met very few who seemed to TRULY believe it. But almost all Cubs fans seem to truly believe that the rival fans are just lower forms of life.
I don’t know. You’re usually one of the nicest Cubs fans I know with the least nasty stuff to say. But even you have this glee in watching bad things happen to your rivals and those “couldn’t happen to a better team or group of fans” swipes at people. Cubs baseball just looks ugly and far too mean spirited even for Northeast fans.

Lucky, visit any Cubs message board, and you will see that all the vitriol spewed at rival fans comes from the fans of those teams starting it. I have never met a fan of any other team that doesn’t still bring up “100 YEARS!” or “BARTMAN!”. Cub fans are perfectly content to focus on our team, but you get Brewers, Sox, Cardinal fans, et. al., who have nothing better to say than “Oh you will collapse like always!” (For a fan base that is supposed to be the “most knowledgeable” about baseball, I have yet to be able to rationally discuss the game with a Cardinal fan.)
And really, shouldn’t we be a little upset considering the product our front office has put on the field for the last several decades (baring the last 5 years, of course)?
